March 25th – Early morning departure for
Washington. Lunch in Binghamton at No. 5 Restaurant, housed in a red brick building that was once Firehouse Number 5. The history, the atmosphere and the feel of the Number 5 began back in 1897 when the current building was completed. For 75 years the Engine Company Number 5 served the South Side of Binghamton. In 1978, Jim McCoy bought the property and developed it into the Number 5 Restaurant we have today. In 1998, the property was declared a local and state landmark. The Number 5 was recently awarded Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s 2008 “Award of Distinction,” presented to the most wine friendly restaurants in the USA. The award is based on selection, service, individuality & value of the overall program. After lunch, continue to Crystal City, just south of downtown Washington, D.C., and check in at the Crystal City Marriott Hotel. Across the river from Washington DC, this Marriott offers access to over 125 Crystal City shops & restaurants via an underground walkway from the hotel as well as onsite access to the Washington DC Metro rail allowing guests to reach the best museums, monuments and attractions of Washington DC and the surrounding area. Evening at leisure. L |

March 27th – After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the Hillwood
Museum where the purchases so carefully made by Marjorie Merriweather Post while
living in the Soviet Union formed the nucleus of the most important assemblage of
Russian imperial art outside Russia today. In 1955 she bought the Hillwood estate to serve both as her residence and as a future museum. At the same time, Mrs. Post began to create a series of pleasure gardens for her leisure and the entertainment of her guests. The twelve acres of formal gardens and grounds are surrounded by thirteen acres of woodland that are strategically nestled against Rock Creek Park, creating a rural ambiance. Transfer to the National Gallery of Art for lunch on your own and an afternoon guided tour of the highlights of the collection. Return to the hotel for dinner on your own and an evening at leisure.(Optional Performances) B |
